Nuclear Threats Program Senior Coordinator

Maylene Hughes is the Nuclear Threats Program Senior Coordinator, where she leads the charge in organizing the Back from the Brink coalition by building a Southern California hub. Her work extends to connecting nuclear weapons with social justice issues and emphasizing their local impact. Maylene's role unites communities to understand the significance of this issue.

She thrives on continuous learning and community engagement. Maylene's passion stems from bridging academia and the community, inspired by her experiences as a low-income, queer, Black/Asian individual. One of her proudest moments is advocating for the renewal of Ireland's National Action Plan Against Racism. Maylene's diverse experience includes roles as an Equity Ambassador at Occidental College, internships with Liberation Ventures, the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, and the Irish Network Against Racism. She also contributed to a Racial Equity Hub website for the City of Los Angeles and served as a copy editor for the CTSJ Journal of Undergraduate Research.

Maylene has a B.A. in Critical Theory & Social Justice from Occidental College. In her free time, she enjoys binge-watching TV, rigorous gym sessions, basketball practice, and exploring new places. She also cherishes Los Angeles' beaches and sunsets; her favorite place is anywhere with friends.
