Eliminating Exposure to
Toxic Substances

All people have the right to live in a healthy community free from environmental harms. Frontline communities are plagued by environmental problems rooted in racism, colonialism, and other intersecting injustices. From Maywood to Watts, there are multiple well-documented reports of foul odors from facilities that store or use hazardous chemicals. But that’s not all: we may also be exposed to toxic chemicals from everyday products like plastic bottles, skin creams, or detergents.

From plastics to pesticides, PSR-LA works for safety at every stage - from petro extraction to chemical production to consumption to disposal. We advocate for a just transition to a cleaner economy that is rooted in the needs of frontline communities and workers who suffer the greatest harm. PSR-LA recognizes that impacted communities know best what they need from public health. Our approach is guided by frontline advocates, and we work in partnership with those most affected to:

  1. Prevent harm by using the precautionary principle to move toward safer alternatives;

  2. Ensure a just transition from a fossil fuel and toxic-chemical-based economy to one that is healthy by design;

  3. Repair the extractive economy and transform it into a sustainable one centered on economic and environmental justice.
