PSR-LA on U.S. Strikes in Iran: No Country Should Have Nuclear Weapons
PSR-LA calls for democracy, diplomacy, and nuclear disarmament in the wake of the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities.
The U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 21, 2025, were a clear violation of the U.S. Constitution, which gives Congress, not the president, the authority to declare war. Even more frightening, this illegal act has increased the threat of nuclear war.
Nuclear weapons are inherently unsafe and unjust, from manufacturing to testing to their use. Communities around the world are still enduring the consequences of nuclear activity, from the Marshallese to the Tulsa Downwinders. Eighty years after the atomic bombs were detonated in Japan, the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still experiencing the long-term effects.
“Nuclear weapons destabilize by design. They do not prevent war; they redefine it. Deterrence is not peace — it is a high-stakes gamble that only works until it doesn’t. It is morally unconscionable to threaten mass murder, the core idea behind nuclear deterrence, in the name of peace and security.”
Since their inception, we have lived in a world where total global annihilation rests in the hands of a few. We have yet to see these arsenals provide safety or prevent conflicts. Instead, they instill fear and fuel military escalation.
We’re seeing this in real-time–Iran has aligned itself with nuclear powers Russia and China. It has indicated it may withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament.
No country should have access to weapons of mass destruction—not Iran, not Israel, not the United States.
Nuclear threats may feel like an issue too big to address, but we have seen time and again the power of community voices. We’ve seen what movements throughout Los Angeles and California can accomplish and how far the impacts in our region reach.
That’s why we need you to urge members of Congress to step up, speak out, and demonstrate real disarmament leadership. Urge House Representatives to co-sponsor H. Res. 317, a comprehensive set of common-sense policies that will help the world step back from the nuclear brink while demanding that the United States pursue a verifiable, time-bound agreement among all nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
The California Congressional delegation has the most representation in Congress. As constituents, we have power, and we must use it.
It’s time for bold leadership in the fight for democracy and nuclear abolition. We must not wait until it is too late to regain our freedom, our health, our planet.
PSR-LA urges the California Congressional delegation and all of Congress to:
Vote for the War Powers Resolution led by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) - S.J.Res. 59 - and Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) - H.Con.Res. 38.
Co-sponsor H.Res.317 (Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Jill Tokuda (D-HI)
The time to act is now. Take action today and urge your representative to co-sponsor H. Res. 317 with Back from the Brink’s action alert.
