Where you live matters. People living adjacent to oil and gas wells are living with the very real possibility of serious health conditions due to exposures from air toxic chemicals that are known to have significant health impacts. And ultimately, once the oil is extracted, refining and burning it causes very real health impacts for everyone.
By simply permitting and disclosing oil extraction and chemical use in our communities, California will be facilitating and expanding our fossil fuel status quo. Responsible policy would be to stop this harmful and reckless activity by banning fracking and other non-conventional oil extraction because—from a health perspective–the facts demand it.
Today in City Hall, Councilmember Paul Koretz and Mike Bonin introduced a motion to place a moratorium on fracking within the City of Los Angeles and along the City’s water supply route.
PSR-LA created an infographic to summarize what is known about the products and chemicals used in fracking and their known effects on human health and the environment.
A commentary by Robert Dodge, MD, who addresses the dangers and underlying issues of fracking for natural gas, a dramatically escalating technology posing unique dangers to our nation’s groundwater and health.
