PSR-LA Helps Rid 99 Cents Stores of Mercury Thermometers

In 2001, California passed SB 633, the Mercury Reduction Act, which made the sale, import, and distribution of mercury thermometers within the state illegal. Since then, pharmacies and retailers have been pulling the devices off their shelves to comply with the law.

Yet the 99 Cents Only chain failed to take action and implement SB 633. This prompted PSR-LA to file a complaint with the California Board of Pharmacy, the entity in charge of the law’s enforcement.

In September, PSR-LA received notice that the Board had contacted the litigation counsel for the stores and that

the mercury thermometers still found in 99 Cent stores aisles are being recalled.

PSR-LA sends a special thanks to our members and colleagues who alerted us to this problem.
