PSR-LA Featured in NBC4 Investigation “LA’s Nuclear Secret”

DodgeNBCPSR-LA Board Member Dr. Robert Dodge is featured in NBC4’s new investigation of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory entitled, “LA”s Nuclear Secret.” The investigation is focused on the contamination at the polluted facility, site of a partial nuclear meltdown in 1959 and other nuclear and chemical accidents, spills, and releases and can be viewed below.

Interviews with whistleblowers, local residents, and health experts give a stunning portrayal of a shocking government secret that has impacted thousands of people. PSR-LA has been working for a full cleanup of the site for over 30 years. Learn more about our efforts here.

The first segment of NBC4 investigation aired on September 21, 2015 and the second segment aired on September 22. NBC4 also has a dedicated page on its website with in depth information.

A third installment, “LA’s Nuclear Secret: Camp Cover-up,” aired on November 9 and focuses on contamination that has migrated to the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, site of a year-round children’s camp. A follow-up to that story on November 19 revealed that the camp’s founder had complained about the contamination dating back to the 1957. More information on their findings regarding Brandeis-Bardin can be found here.

NBC aired the fifth segment on Monday, December 14. “LA’s Nuclear Secret – Call For Action” reveals that Boeing now estimates that as many as 96 people out of 100 would get cancer from the contamination if they lived on some portions of the site – yet it has asked state regulators to allow them to not clean up about 98% of the soil on its property. Also as reported by NBC, LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, LA City Councilmember Mitch Englander, State Senator Fran Pavley and Congresswoman Julia Brownley have called on the Director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Barbara Lee, to reject Boeing’s requests and instead reaffirm past DTSC commitments to require a cleanup of all the contamination.

A 6th segmented aired on February 29, 2016, “Living in the Shadow of a Toxic Mess,” which examined whether contamination from SSFL has migrated into Runkle Canyon where a new housing development, “Arroyo Vista at the Woodlands,” is nearing completion.

On May 4, 2016, NBC4 broadcast a 7th segment, “Camp Controversy,” about a new study commissioned by American Jewish University which asserts its Brandeis-Bardin Institute property, home of Camp Alonim children’s camp, is not impacted by contamination from SSFL. Several experts refuted the study, noting that Tetra Tech, the company that performed the study, took only 16 samples for the entire 2,878 site and is under investigation for falsifying soil samples at another site.
