March 27 – PSR-LA 30th Anniversary Membership Dinner

PSR-LA’s 30th Anniversary Membership Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at the UCLA Faculty Club and will feature special guests speakers Ira Helfand, MD and California State Senator Fran Pavley. Join us as we celebrate three decades of public health advocacy made possible by the support and active participation of our members. Ira Helfand, MD is a Co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He has published studies on the medical consequences of nuclear war in the New England Journal of Medicine, and the British Medical Journal, and has lectured widely in the United States, and in India, China, Russia, and throughout Europe. His most recent study An Assessment of the Extent of Projected Global Famine Resulting From Limited, Regional Nuclear War was presented at the Royal Society of Medicine, London in 2007. Dr. Helfand currently serves on the Executive Committees of PSR and its global federation the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. He represented PSR and IPPNW at the Nobel ceremonies in Oslo this past December honoring President Obama. Dr. Helfand is an internist and emergency physician who practices in Springfield, Massachusetts.

California State Senator Fran Pavley represents Senate District 23 including portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties in the California Legislature. Prior to her election to the Senate, Fran Pavley served three terms in the California State Assembly. Her landmark legislation on global warming has become a model for other states and countries to follow. Highlighting her leadership on this issue, fourteen other states have modeled their own laws after AB 1493 (Clean Car Regulations), now known as the “Pavley” law. With the “Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006” (AB 32), Senator Pavley authored a groundbreaking approach to cap greenhouse gas emissions emitted from California. Pavley is also working to ensure the implementation of SB 990, which will ensure that the Santa Susana Field Laboratory is cleaned up to the highest possible environmental standards. Most recently, Pavley authored AB 797 which would ban the toxic chemical bisphenal A (BPA) in food and beverage containers designed for children 3 years and younger.
