Nuclear Energy

The first reactors were exclusively built to garner the radioisotope – plutonium – to build nuclear weapons. Indeed, the average-size commercial reactor produces approximately 200 pounds of plutonium each year. To limit the proliferation of nuclear bomb-making materials, PSR-LA believes in moving away from nuclear energy.

In 2002, PSR-LA played a leading role in winning legislation that ended the state’s attempt to build a radioactive waste dump at Ward Valley. The act further ensures that all future waste dumps are built to the highest standards.
