Creating Stronger Air Pollution Policy & Reducing Urban Oil Extraction

We bring health professionals and health advocates voices to the public debate about what’s at stake as local, state, and federal decision-makers develop and implement environmental policies. For example, PSR-LA developed the “Don’t Gag Docs” campaign for the California Legislature’s 2013. There, PSR-LA challenged the effort to give the oil and gas industry the ability to hide the names of toxic and hazardous chemicals used in communities to extract oil and gas and to require doctors to sign a confidentiality agreement that placed them at personal peril if they disclosed the truth about patient and public exposures to–and illness caused by–those chemicals. Some of the materials from that campaign can be found here.

Currently, PSR-LA is focused on supporting community efforts to protect themselves from the health harms caused by the air pollution caused by oil and gas extraction [link to LA Times article about AllenCo] and by working to get the City of Los Angeles to prohibit oil and gas extraction in communities. We supported LA City Councilmembers Paul Koretez and Mike Bonin when they announced [link to the Facebook video] their effort to get a citywide prohibition on oil and gas extraction [link to city file], and we supported [link to doctor support letter] them when the City Council voted to take the first steps toward making the prohibition a reality [link to adopted motion] was passed by the Los Angeles City Council.

Now we are working to finish what has been started!
