Japan Nuclear Disaster
PSR-LA extends its deepest sympathy to the people of Japan. Much is yet to be known about the amount of radiation being released from the damaged nuclear reactors or how long the releases will occur. PSR-LA is deeply concerned about the threat this nuclear disaster poses to public health.

Dr. Avner Cohen, Senior Fellow at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (Washington D.C.), is widely known for his path-breaking history of the Israeli nuclear program, is an internationally recognized author and expert on nonproliferation issues, focusing on the Middle East.
April 6 – Cumulative Impacts in LA: Public Health’s Role in Emerging Policy Solutions
Please join us in an educational forum and dialogue with public health leaders about the problem of cumulative environmental impacts and the disproportionate impact on low-income communities of color. This session will examine the latest research on toxic hot spots, underlying social determinants and emerging policy solutions.
March 30 – Clean Air, Healthy Communities Citizens Hearing
Clean air champions from across California are holding a citizens’ hearing on clean air rules that are under attack from industry and their congressional allies. The hearing comes as congressional leaders attempt to undo several of these health protections.
March 24 – Semper Fi: Always Faithful
Sundance Institute presents a Work-In-Progress Screening of the documentary Semper Fi: Always Faithful. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jerry Ensminger was a devoted Marine for nearly twenty-five years, indoctrinating thousands of new recruits in his role as drill instructor. When Jerry’s nine-year-old daughter dies of a rare type of leukemia, the grief-stricken father struggles to make sense of what happened. In his search for answers he discovers a Marine Corps cover-up of one of the largest water contamination incidents in U.S. history.
March 25 – Webinar – The Jobs, Costs, and Security Landscape of a US Nuclear Expansion
Will the disaster in Japan shift the U.S. perspective on new nuclear energy development? While it may give us pause, the overall trajectory for nuclear energy as a ‘clean’ and ‘safe’ energy source for the U.S. may not shift significantly.
March 15 – American Overreach? Evaluating US Middle East Policy with special attention to recent events in Egypt
Aslı Ü. Bâli, Acting Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law, explores why American policy in the Middle East designed to advance democracy tends to yield outcomes that frustrate the aspirations of local actors while undermining the values purportedly being promoted by the US.

January 20 – My Brother’s Keeper
The Program for Torture Victims is hosting a screening of “My Brother’s Keeper,” a documentary portraying the travels and work of the former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Nowak. On his missions to countries around the globe he all too often finds clear evidence that torture is commonplace in today’s world.
US Senate Ratifies New START Treaty
by Stephen Coles, MD, PhD – PSR-LA is delighted that the New START Treaty between the USA and Russia has finally been ratified today in the US Senate by a vote of 71 to 26.
January 13 – Preparing for the Possibility of a North Korean Collapse
North Korea’s escalating provocations reflect a level of instability in North Korea. This instability is exacerbated by the dynastic succession now apparently planned to Kim Jong-Il’s youngest son, Kim Jong-Un (27), who lacks the preparation his father had. While the North Korean regime may yet survive for a decade or more, it could also collapse in the coming years.
January 6 – Nuclear Fallout: Health/Public Policy/Human Cost
Dr. Jimmy Hara, PSR-LA Board Member and Peace and Security Ambassador, will participate in Nuclear Fallout: Health/Public Policy/Human Cost, an Interactive Panel Discussion framed by artist, Sandy Bleifer’s exhibition: The Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial Project on Thursday, January 6th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
